about

Another favourite of my solo rep. Taken from a source at Oxford's Bodleian Library and found in the great recordings of Magpie Lane. Fell in love with this as it was the hunt as 'seen from the viewpoint of the fox'. I took the opening moments from a recent rehearsal recording, looped the sequence as main backing track, and added drums, guitar and melodeon.

lyrics

“Death of the Fox” – Bodleian Library 19thC.

SOME GENTLEMEN TAKE GREAT DELIGHT
IN HUNTING BOLD REYNARD THE FOX.
ON YON STONEY COMMON I RAN
AND I LIVED UPON FAT GEESE AND DUCKS
I LIVED UPON FAT GEESE AND DUCKS
NEVER THINKING SO SOON AS TO DIE
I WAS CHASED BY A PACK OF FRESH HOUNDS
WHICH CAUSED ME MY COUNTRY TO FLY.

AS THROUGH THIS WIDE COUNTRY I RAMBLED
I LIVED AN EXTRAVAGENT RATE
YOUNG LAMBS I TOOK FOR ME LIVING
THE FARMERS ALL DID ME HATE.
ALL FOR ME LORD’S HOUSE THEY DID SEND
GERRY BALSHOM HE SWORE I SHOULD DIE
BUT I LEFT TWO BROTHERS BEHIND ME
WHO LOVED YOUNG LAMBS BETTER THAN I.

AS THROUGH THIS WIDE COUNTRY I RAN
THE BLOODTHIRSTY HOUNDS DID ME FOLLOW
IT MADE ME OLD COAT STAND ON END
TO HEAR HOW THOSE HUNTSMEN DID HOLLER.
OFTIMES I HAVE BEEN SO SURPRISED
BY A DOG THAT COULD RUN LIKE A COW
BUT IN ALL THE DARK TIMES OF MY LIFE
I’VE N’ERE TOOK A BREATH UNTIL NOW

FOR FORTYFIVE MILES I RUN
I RAN IT IN FIVE HOURS SPACE
OH PARDON DEAR HUNTSMEN AND HOUNDS
SO SWEETLY YOU FOLLOWED THE CHASE
T’WAS NEAR SIMON STEWART’S I RAN
WHERE THE GATEKEEPER SHOT THROUGH ME THIGH
PARDON DEAR HUNTSMAN AND HOUNDS
BY THIS FATEFUL WOUND I WOULD DIE

ON YON STONEY COMMON THEY KILLED ME
OH THERE I WAS FORCED FOR TO DIE
THE HOUNDS THEY TORE ME TO PIECES
THEY MADE ME OLD WESKIT TO FLY
SO NOW YOU BOLD REYNARD HAVE KILLED
YOU MAY GO TO THE ‘DOLPHIN’ TO DINE
AND DIP MY FOOT IN A FULL BUMPER
AND DRINK YOUR LORD’S HEALTH IN GOOD WINE.
